Hobby Lobby

Hobby Lobby stores, located in the US, carry beading supplies in addition to craft, hobby, and home furnishing supplies of all kinds.

Hobby Lobby's beading supplies are low to mid-range in quality and retail price. From inexpensive plastic beads to quality sterling silver findings, there is a decent variety to choose from. Types of beads available in the stores include

- Seed beads (craft quality) in a good variety of colors
- Czech glass and mixes
- Lampwork glass
- Cloisonne
- Crystal (Swarovski and Czech fire polish)
- Plastic
- Silver plated
- Silver-color base metal
- Sterling silver
- Natural material
etc., (not all types of beads will be available at all stores)

Stringing material, including beading wire (Beadalon and Softflex brands), leather and suede lace, plastic lace, Stretch Magic, and memory wire are carried in craft to professional quality; tools are on the lower end but serviceable for most bead hobbyists. Basic findings (crimps, head pins, earring wires, broach pin backs, etc.,) are also available. Wire (craft quality, copper or sterling silver) is not carried.

When purchasing items, be sure to examine them carefully. Because of bulk shipping and slower turn on some items, I have found broken lampwork beads and severely tarnished sterling on the Hobby Lobby shelves.

Hobby Lobby runs weekly ads on jewelry making products - watch local papers (or the store web site) for 1/3 - 1/2 off categories every week. Sterling and Swarovski products are close to wholesale price when purchased on sale. Hobby Lobby also has weekly coupons and specials via their web site. Coupons are for the brick and mortar stores only as product is not available for sale through their web site.

In-store classes are available for beading enthusiasts, primarily at the beginner level. Attendees make jewelry using Hobby Lobby supplies. Also, free project sheets are available in store.

Overall, Hobby Lobby is a good source of beading supplies for the bead enthusiast who is interested in beading as a hobby or to make single projects. The immediate gratification of having beads in your hand versus ordering online is a definite plus; however, product is generally not top quality, and can be expensive if purchasing for a beading business. Check for sales and/or coupons to reduce the cost.

For professional beaders, Hobby Lobby is a good alternative for "emergency" supplies, especially items are purchased on sale or with a percent off coupon.

Store hours are 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Hobby Lobby stores are closed on Sundays.
